We have a wonderful vintage Adirondack chair we’ve had for years now, but it is so weather worn and well-loved that it’s ready to retire. Everyone has spent time sitting in the back yard comfortably nestled in its arms reading and enjoying themselves as they catch a few rays and drinking a cold one of choice. No doubt it’s only a matter of time before the darn thing collapses and I was especially pleased to see the Highwood Adirondack chair arrive.
If you are not a seasoned pro at assembling furniture, you might want to ask someone to help you out. Between the two of us, the chair was good to go in a half hour. That included setting out the pieces, assembling our tools, and discussing the instructions. They are actually very clear, but familiarity with instructional materials does help. We did use a socket wrench for ease of assembly and had to ream out any hole that required a plastic washer. We also have on order the Highwood folding side table to place extra reading materials on or a pitcher of ice tea or lemonade when we have guests. If you are going to use your chair or chairs poolside, you might enjoy the Highwood folding ottoman.
Seat cushions are available, but we opted not to purchase or use one. I personally like the contoured style of this chair as the design, although classic, has that modern ergonomic feel. My old chair is not adjustable, but this chair has three positions. Each fit is tight, adding to the sturdiness of the chair as there is very little wiggle room once set in position. The design is very similar to the old one and the comfort level is high. We haven’t had the chair long enough for the weather to affect it, but because of the textured design, undoubtedly it will need to be wiped down as the elements will affect the surface. The surface is similar to some siding textures and will not be difficult to keep clean.
PROS:
++ The chair is weather resistant, although I would recommend putting it up for the winter in areas that experience freezing temperatures.
++ It’s very durable under normal use and should not experience any breaks in the material.
++ The contoured back is very comfortable with its ergonomic fit.
++ The chair is essentially maintenance free, save periodic cleaning.
++ Folds up for easy storage. It does not fold flat, but unlike the wood ones can be tucked into a garage or storage shed.
++ It has a very classic, attractive look that will enhance your backyard, cottage, or pool surroundings.
CONS:
- The assembly may prove somewhat difficult for those who have not had experience assembling furniture or items such as children’s toys. I’d recommend having a helper to work with you on this project to make sure the chair is assembled properly and to decrease frustration.
When the chair arrived the edge of a slat was sheared off by impact damage at a vulnerable point. The shipper obviously tossed the box (which was quite well packed) from a height. I don’t consider this issue a quality one, but rather that of problem shipping issues. When I called Highwood I found that customer service was impeccable and I received two replacement slats and extra hardware on my porch via next day air. Needless to say, I was some impressed. No, the chair isn’t wood, but it does look great, is totally comfortable, and I don’t have to paint it. All in all, I’m quite pleased and am sure we’ll spend many years enjoying our new Highwood Adirondack chair without the extra maintenance.

|Beautiful & durable,
I have several of these chairs & they are fantastic. We went thru wood chairs every two years. These are 6years old and look like new. Thru snow, wind, everything, they don’t change. They are comfortable and sturdy. Worth the money when you think about replacing wood ones or spending time staining. They’re the best.

|Big heavy very nice lawn chair,
The shipping box arrived intact and undamaged. It was heavy and bulky but not too difficult to move to an area roomy enough for assembly. While the instructions don’t say one way or the other, assembly will go better and faster if you have an extra set of hands.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the instruction sheet to put the chair together won’t win any awards. Like most DIY assembly products there is a bit of a puzzle atmosphere in the air while you try to figure out how exactly item A is supposed to attach to leg D since levitation devices haven’t been invented yet.
The chair itself is heavy so the component parts are heavy which makes solo assembly a little challenging. I’d like to contrast some of the other reviews that docked a star over the instruction sheet – I just didn’t find it incredibly difficult to assemble and I did it alone. That could be just because I’ve done other assembly recently or I had much lower expectations of the assembly instructions. I agree for such a high quality piece of furniture it is reasonable to expect some attention to detail on how to put it together.
Although the instructions call for a drill to ease bolting together the chair it isn’t really necessary.
After the chair is finally assembled it is very sturdy. The chair is nice and roomy. I’m a big guy and didn’t feel squeezed at all which is a big point in its favor in my opinion. It is also very comfortable. If you plan to spend a long time sitting in it then a cushion might be good to have but really you’d have to sit quite a while for that to be necessary and most parties out in the yard involve a lot of moving around – it isn’t like you are sitting to watch a movie in the chair.
The chair looks good too. Something you’ll be proud to have in the back yard.
It does fold up but being such a big chair it is still bulky while folded and it does not ‘lock’ into the storage position. But if you wanted to put it up in the shed for the cold season you could do so without too much trouble.
I plan on getting a second chair and at least one of the matching side tables once the weather turns warm again around here. I’ll probably get one of the ottomans too.

I recently moved the chair around the yard. I remembered writing how heavy it was in the review and thought I'd update what I had said.
It is a heavy chair. It isn't super heavy. I had no problem folding it up and moving it around. A small woman or child would probably be a bit more challenged. Part of that would stem from the weight but a lot of it would be the bulkiness I think.
Anyway. It isn't so heavy that it weighs a ton.
